All Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2024 Qualified Teams and Their Seeds
Yuriy SheremetThe esports scene of League of Legends is quite an interesting phenomenon. We see a clear focus on regional competitions, with their huge number of matches, which can lead to oversaturation with League play. However, there's something that never gets tiresome: international events, namely the Mid-Season Invitational 2024.
Mid-Season Invitational 2024 is the first international tournament in the 14th competitive season of League of Legends and a debut championship where representatives of all major regions will compete. This year, MSI 2024 will be hosted in China, but for now, we're interested in the participants of the event, namely all the teams that have qualified for the Mid-Season Invitational 2024. In this article, we get to know them better.
All Mid-Season Invitational 2024 Play-In Teams
Before we delve into the consideration of the teams that made it to MSI 2024, it's worth noting that all participants, a total of 12, according to their results in the regional spring splits, have reached different stages of the tournament. In the initial stage – MSI 2024 Play-In – 8 teams from the regions will compete. Now, let's take a closer look at them.
T1 (Top 2 in LCK Spring 2024)
Let's start with the reigning world champions, the winners of Worlds 2023, and one of the most famous and influential organizations in esports – T1. Even with all the aforementioned titles and T1's status, it didn't guarantee them immediate entry into the Bracket Stage (main stage) of the Mid-Season Invitational 2024.
The reason for T1's failure to reach the main stage of the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 is simple: T1 couldn't win their home split, LCK Spring 2024. In the grand final, T1 lost to Gen.G with a score of 2-3, which prevented them from advancing to the main stage of the championship.
However, T1 remains a formidable force, as last year, at MSI 2023, Faker and company made it to the top three, and the year before that, they were Top 2 at Mid-Season Invitational 2022. Overall, T1 hasn't won MSI since 2017.
Top Esports (Top 2 in LPL Spring 2024)
Another serious contender who didn't make it to the main stage is Top Esports. TES, like T1, secured the second place in their home region, LPL Spring 2024, losing to Bilili Gaming. The Chinese giant has been going through challenging times in recent years, but with the addition of Meiko to the team, the situation seems to have changed somewhat.
For TES, the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 will be a significant tournament. It's their home championship, and they have the desire to play in front of their home crowd.
Fnatic (Top 2 in LEC Spring 2024)
The next representative of a major region who will play in the Play-In of the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 is Fnatic. The European club managed to qualify for the first international tournament of this season through various trials and tribulations.
Fnatic succeeded in qualifying for MSI 2024, securing the Top 2 spot in LEC Spring 2024. Moreover, they did so with great difficulty, winning the LEC Spring 2024 lower bracket final against BDS. And not just winning, but completing a reverse sweep from 0-2 to 3-2.
FlyQuest (Top 2 in LCS Spring 2024)
The last representative of a major region to play in the Play-In of the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 is the American club FlyQuest. And this is a rare guest on the international scene.
The only time FlyQuest attended an international tournament was back in 2020 at Worlds (and they were Top 12 there). So, the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 is the debut tournament in the MSI series for the American club. They made it here as the Top 2 team in America, reaching the final of LCS Spring 2024.
PSG Talon (Top 1 in PCS Spring 2024)
PSG Talon are true veterans of the MSI series tournaments. For the team from Taiwan, this will be their 4th championship under the Mid-Season Invitational (before this, PSG Talon participated in MSI 2021, MSI 2022, and MSI 2023).
One of the most experienced participants of MSI 2024 qualified for this year's tournament by winning their league, PCS Spring 2024. They have consistently been doing this since entering LoL, starting in 2020.
LOUD (Top 1 in CBLOL Split 1)
The Brazilians from LOUD are somewhat similar to PSG Talon. Besides being from a region that could become a major region, they also play in international tournaments, including the MSI series tournaments.
Last time at the Mid-Season Invitational, in 2023, LOUD finished in Top 11, and this time they were on the brink of failure. LOUD managed to win against paiN in the CBLOL Split 1 grand final with a score of 1-2, which was one of the brightest games of the spring splits this season.
GAM Esports (Top 1 in VCS Spring 2024)
GAM Esports have been on the radar of the world League of Legends since 2017, and since then, they can rightfully be called the strongest team in Vietnam. The only year when GAM missed a championship of international caliber was 2018.
In VCS Spring 2024, GAM Esports faced difficulties. After making it to the playoffs of their home league, they lost in the first match of the main stage. However, they managed to come back in the lower bracket and seek revenge against Vikings Esports in the grand final.
Estral Esports (Top 1 in LLA Opening 2024)
Perhaps the most stressed out team playing at MSI 2024 is Estral Esports. They are a fairly young Mexican team that unexpectedly made it to the Mid-Season Invitational 2024.
In their home league, they defeated Rainbow7, who were a constant representative of LLA on the international stage. For Estral Esports, the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 will be their first international tournament.
All Mid-Season Invitational 2024 Bracket Stage
Now, onto the main (Bracket Stage) of MSI 2024. More precisely, the best teams of the spring season, who have advanced to the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) 2024 after winning their regional leagues. There are 4 such teams, and they are all residents of Major regions: South Korea (LCK), China (LPL), Europe (LEC), and North America (LCS).
Gen.G (Top 1 in LCK Spring 2024)
Champions from South Korea always receive special attention on the international stage. And at the Mid-Season Invitational 2024, Gen.G deserves such attention. It's not surprising, as it's rare (or rather, it has never happened before) for a club to earn 4 consecutive LCK championships. This spring, Gen.G defeated T1 in the grand final with a score of 3-2.
However, Gen.G hasn't had much success on the international scene. Globally speaking, Gen.G hasn't been able to rise above Top 4 at Worlds. Looking at the Mid-Season Invitational series (MSI), Gen.G has played in these tournaments twice: in 2020 and 2023, reaching Top 4 both times.
Bilibili Gaming (Top 1 in LPL Spring 2024)
One of the main favorites at the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 (MSI 2024) will be Bilibili Gaming. This spring, they won LPL Spring 2024, which is the most competitive region in terms of the number of participants, with 17 teams in LPL Spring 2024.
Bilibili Gaming easily won their home spring split, all thanks to a serious upgrade in recent years. Since 2018, when BLG appeared on the professional scene, they haven't been stellar. But in 2023, everything changed after the arrival of Yagao, Bin, and Xun. Since then, with star players on their roster, BLG reached the MSI 2023 grand final and made it to the semifinals of Worlds 2023.
G2 Esports (Top 1 in LEC Spring 2024)
The European league (LEC) remains a major region and is part of the Major leagues alongside LCK, LPL, and LCS, but it has been stagnating for years. There aren't many competitive teams from Europe on the international stage, and G2 Esports truly confirm this.
G2 is the absolute and undisputed champion of Europe. It seems like it's already too easy for them in their region, but they haven't reached the level of LCK and LPL yet. In the 2024 season, the club won both splits (LEC Winter and LEC Spring 2024), and if they could have taken two slots at MSI, they would have done so. G2 Esports have had a long relationship with the Mid-Season Invitational series: G2 Esports first attended MSI in 2016 and have only missed the competition in 2018, 2020, and 2021. G2's highest achievement remains their victory at Mid-Season Invitational 2019, when they defeated Team Liquid 3-0 in the grand final.
Team Liquid (Top 1 in LCS Spring 2024)
Last on the list but certainly not least is Team Liquid, the champions of the spring split of the American LCS.
For Liquid, this year's trip to the Mid-Season Invitational 2024 in Chengdu won't be their first visit to the Mid-Season Invitational series tournaments. However, Liquid is not a team that consistently dominates in their region, as evidenced by only three trips to MSI (including MSI 2024) in the history of the club in LoL, which dates back to 2015. However, when it comes to performance on those rare occasions when Liquid plays on the international stage, it's quite decent: they were Top 5 in 2018 and second place in 2019.
