Overwatch 2 Ranks: A list of all the ranks and how the ranking system works in the game
Yuriy SheremetIn October 2022, Blizzard released Overwatch 2, the sequel to the 2016 release of the team-based shooter of the same name. With the new numbered instalment, the developers brought a ton of changes to the game from the development of Overwatch's visual style, to the game modes and development concept of their creation.

However, no matter how much the game's content changes, there are still a few monolithic aspects of Overwatch 2. One of them is the OW 2 rating system.
We decided to talk about the principles of the game's rating system, talk about Overwatch 2's ranks, and compare the modern competitive segment of the game to what was in the original Overwatch 2016.
How the ranking system in Overwatch 2 is built and its differences from the ranking system in Overwatch
Let's start with the most trivial thing - the ranked game modes in Overwatch 2. To open access to ranked games you need to play 50 matches in the regular selection, but if you have already done it in Overwatch 1 you can immediately go to conquer the ladder without additional conditions. Returning to the topic of rating modes, there are two in total:
- Ranked Role Play
- Free Quest
Ranked Role Play involves selecting the desired role when searching for a match. It allows you to play on characters you are comfortable with, but affects the speed of matchmaking.
Free search occurs without being tied to a specific role. The game will find faster, but it is not a fact that you will play as a DPS character, even if you really want to.
Otherwise, Overwatch 2 can hardly be called a breakthrough in terms of the structure of the competitive component of the game. The rating system in Overwatch 2 is similar to the one in the original, but with its own peculiarities.
Perhaps the main change in the rating system in Overwatch 2 in relation to Overwatch is in the mechanics of raising the rank. In Overwatch 2 the so-called individual competitive rank works. It is created based on the player's personal parameters.
This parameter is dynamic, that is, it changes after each win or loss in ranked games. It allows to evaluate the player's skills (Skill Rating) as accurately and objectively as possible. By the way, it is individual for each role. That is, the Skill Rating on DPS, tanks, and players will be different.
In turn, Skill Rating affects the rank. It changes after getting 5 wins or 15 losses in the ranked game selection. Thus, the rank will change depending on what happens first: if you win 5, the rank will increase, if you lose 15, the rank will drop.
However, Skill Rating does not take into account the actual rank when selecting opponents and teammates in competitive games. In other words, being a conditional Gold, you may find yourself in a lobby with Bronze or Diamond level players.
Now let's talk about the ranks themselves in Overwatch 2.
