Esports news DRX
In brief:
DRX Esports LoL, also known as DragonX (abbreviated as DRX) is a titled team in the world of League of Legends from South Korea. The club is a resident of one of the four Major leagues in the competitive LoL, LCK.
The club is young in terms of the global esports industry, however, it has already made a statement. 2022 was a crucial year in the history of DRX but the club had passed a long path to do so.
The first appearance and the debut results of DragonX
DRX was mentioned in esports for the first time in 2018. In January, the company KING-ZONE revealed its League of Legends division, the debut roster of which included Khan, Rascal, Cuzz, Peanut, Bdd, PraY, and GorillA.
In the same year, DragonX bought a slot in LCK 2023. The team replaced Longhzu Gaming, which was playing in LCK from 2016 to 2018.
The first test of strength for the recently-created club was the spring split of LCK 2018. They passed it with dignity: the team played a regular season confidently, having placed 1st in the standings with an impressive score of 16-2.
Due to the features of the format of LCK Spring 2018, DragonX started the playoffs from the final stage. The team prevailed in the only match of the main stage easily, having won the first cup in its history.
Later in 2018, the team visited Mid-Season Invitational where it represented South Korea. Khan and the team managed to perform decently and even made it to the grand final but they were stopped in the final match by RNG who defeated DragonX with a score of 3-1.
During the year, DRX continued playing at a high level, however, it was not enough. The team held 4th place at LCK Summer 2018 and 2nd place at LCK Regional Finals 2018.
The team failed to qualify for the World Championship and the club decided to reshuffle.
Finding themselves and the period of decline in 2018-2021
At the beginning of 2019, the team suffered drastic changes but it was not enough to improve the performance. Khan, Bdd, Peanut, PraY, and GorillA left the roster.
Rascal, PawN, NaeHuyn, Deft, and TusiN were invited instead of the past players. The nickname Deft will enter the history of the club and world League of Legends over time but it will happen three years later, and the team will be trying to return to the top of South Korea in 2019: it will partly succeed thanks to the 3rd place at LCK Spring 2019.
The tendency partly continued in 2020, however, that year was a breakthrough for DragonX. First of all, the team changed its title for the second time (it removed the Dragon tag in 2019 and got the canonical tag DRX a year later), and, secondly, they qualified for the World Championship, Worlds, for the first time.
Before the debut World Championship, DRX placed 3rd at LCK Spring 2019, entered the top 6 at Mid-Season Invitational 2020, and held 2nd place at LCK Summer 2020. Thanks to the last achievement, they attended Worlds 2020 in Shanghai.
The pre-COVID Worlds was over for DRX with the top 6, which was a pretty decent result for the first tournament of such a scale in the club’s history. The upcoming efforts of DRX made the result even more important.
The team changed its roster once again in 2021: all five players parted ways with the organization and their slots were taken by Kingen, Pyosik, SOLKA, BAO, and Becca. The new face of DRX failed the whole 11th season completely: the team reached the top 5 at LCK Spring 2021 and held 10th place at LCK Summer 2021.
Such a devastating performance led to another roster change. In 2022, Deft returned to DRX and, also, was accompanied by the 2020 World Champion, BeryL, and young Zeka.
The roster of DRX 2022
The updated roster had to solve the issues of DRX, which they faced in 2021. And they failed to do this in that region.
In the spring of 2022, DRX placed 5th at LCK Spring 2022, after which its situation became even worse, finishing 6th at LCK Summer 2022. LCK Regional Finals 2022 was a lifeline for DRX where DRX beat SANDBOX Gaming in a difficult bo5 series and made it to Worlds 2022.
The Deft’s Last Dance
DRX started Worlds 2022 from the very lows: the team went to Play-In. In the qualifying stage, the opponents of DRX were Royal Never Give Up, MAD Lions, Saigon Buffalo, Isurus, and Istanbul Wildcats.
The advancement of DRX to the next stage was predictable but the first-place slot was not at all. The main competitor of DRX was Royal Never Give Up, which prevailed at Mid-Season Invitational that season but they were not able to defeat DRX.
Having proceeded to the group stage, DRX joined Group C where they faced Rogue, Top Esports, and GAM ESports. The South Korean club placed 1st and advanced to the playoffs.
The situation that happened with DRX on the main stage is called the Cinderella story in esports and big sports. DRX defeated EDward Gaming, the champions of Worlds 2021, having done the reverse sweep from losing with a score of 0-2, and beat the champions of LCK Summer 2022, Gen.G.
T1, the thunderstorm of competitive League of Legends and the three-time world champion, was the final opponent for DRX at the historic Worlds 2022. The match was an iconic grand final, which brought viewers a complete bo5 series with intense matches, and an unexpected outcome.
DRX defeated T1 with a score of 3-2, having stolen the fourth Summoner’s Cup from Faker. It was the second victory for BeryL but Zeka, for example, became the debut champion.
The community called the advancement of DRX through the playoff bracket the Deft’s Last Dance: the thing is that the esportsman was considering finishing his career and there were rumors that Worlds 2022 was his last tournament as a player. And it was over with a complete triumph.
The problems of DRX in the 2023 season
After the victory at Worlds 2022, the appetite of the DRX players increased significantly. The club was not able to satisfy the needs of the golden roster, so they had to part with almost the whole championship roster: BeryL was the only one to remain and Rascal returned to the team after a long absence.
The results of DRX decreased significantly, which led to the unsatisfying performance at LCK Spring 2023.
How much DRX earned
Being on the competitive scene since 2018, DRX Esports LoL has earned ~1,186,000 dollars, which is 63% of the club’s total income. The most effective players on the roster are Deft, Pyosik, Kingen, BeryL, and Zeka, and, also, Juhan who was listed as a stand-in in the roster at Worlds 2022.
