Where Will The Biggest Online Games Be In 10 Years?

A lot can change in 10 years. Just look at the Call of Duty franchise. 10 years ago, Call of Duty: Black Ops II was released into the world. Since then, nearly 20 titles have been released under different studios and across multiple consoles. People might complain that the franchise releases these titles with little to no changes, but back in 2012, we didn't have the juggernaut that is Call of Duty: Warzone - one of the most popular shooters on the market now that is just as much of a spectator sport as it is highly competitive for the people playing.

That same concept of evolving over time can be said about almost all of the most popular games right now. So, what happens to some of the biggest titles in another 10 years? Are they virtually unrecognizable and going in a new direction or will it be the same gameplay with a fresh coat of paint? Will they be around at all in 10 years? We're going to take a deep dive into three online games and guess what we might see from them in another decade. Let's start with one of the most popular game types out there.

League of Legends

League of Legends has undergone many patches and improvements in its impressive 13-year lifespan, but we think some of the biggest changes are yet to come. Instead of focusing on making completely new titles, it's believed that Riot Games are focusing on enhancing the experience they already provide. And in order to do that eventually, we'll see a virtual reality version of the game. This will take an established formula and bring new depth to it that will not only bring in new players but also new viewers. When haptic suits, advanced headsets, and dedicated VR developers hit the scene in force, LoL will be one of the biggest games to make the step to virtual reality.

Rocket League

Rocket League had one of the most interesting releases as it promised one of the best chill sessions with players barely caring if they win or lose, but that carefree persona has slowly faded and left the highly competitive world of Rocket League that we now have. Similar to League of Legends, Rocket League will make the change to virtual reality. However, Rocket League has the uniqueness of being a semi-racer to make it stand out from the rest of the online VR titles.

While games like Halo, Valorant, or CS: GO will firmly place shooters in the view of spectators and players, Rocket League will offer players the ability to sit in the driver's seat. This could also lead way to mechs being in the spotlight as we already see a VR mech game inspired by Rocket League on the market. We could have VR Rocket League games where players suit up and slide into a cock pit to play football or basketball. Who wouldn't want to at least see that?
