Esports news Sentinels
In brief:
Sentinels, a North American eSports organisation, was founded in mid-2018 with the help of several influential investors. However, the history of the club dates back to 2016, when the Phoenix1 team was formed to compete in the League of Legends North American Championship Series. However, in 2018, the team was renamed Sentinels, becoming a full-fledged organisation.
Over the course of its existence, the club has acquired line-ups in disciplines such as Fortnite, Hearthstone, Apex Legends and Halo. However, the North American organization's meteoric rise came in 2020, when Sentinels was the first to take notice of VALORANT and assembled its first professional roster.
The Sentinels organization is now one of the largest in North America. The club is known not only for its results, but also for its strong content creation team, thanks to which it is actively building up its fan base. In doing so, Sentinels is a cohesive brand that works for the benefit of all represented squads.
History of the emergence of the Sentinels VALORANT team
Back in April 2020, in fact, as the game's release date neared, Sentinels unveiled their first VALORANT roster. It included well-known professionals from other eSports disciplines - ShahZaM, SicK, sinatraa, zombs and dapr.
Naturally, with such an experienced team Sentinels instantly became a noticeable force on the North American scene. In the early months the band had already won several championships, including the PAX Arena Invitational and Pop Flash. At the same time, the band gained popularity outside of North America, making a name for themselves with strong performances.
However, the Sentinels failed to make a name for themselves in their first Riot Games-sponsored tournament, finishing only 3-4th in First Strike North America.
The team's meteoric rise in the first season of VCT
With the emergence of a cohesive competitive scene, the Sentinels managed to establish themselves as a leader not only in the North American region, but also on the international stage.
In the early months the team managed to win VCT 2021: North America Stage 1 Masters and then went on to become the champion of the first full Masters in Reykjavik, defeating Fnatic 3-0 in the Grand Final.
This success came thanks to the landmark transfer of TenZ from Cloud9, as the young Canadian quickly took over as the main star and began to produce impressive numbers.
As the season progressed, the team continued to dominate their region, taking the third split entirely. But the Sentinels suffered a breakdown at the end of 2021, which culminated in defeats at the VCT 2021: Stage 3 Masters - Berlin and the VALORANT Champions 2021.
Sentinels failures and getting into the affiliate league
After failing at the end of 2021, the Sentinels organisation did not make any hasty decisions, relying on their previous squad. However, the team failed in the starting VCT 2022: North America Stage 1 Challengers, dropping out of the playoffs first.
After that the club began to look for new ways to develop, deciding to seriously freshen up their roster and bring in newcomers from young teams. However, Sentinels continued to fall apart in subsequent tournaments, failing to qualify for any international championships before the 2022 season.
However, at the end of the year, the organisation managed to fulfil its main objective - to get into the affiliate programme. This entailed a serious reshuffle of the roster, as Sentinels gave up their former backbone by signing star players from LOUD and XSET.
Scandals surrounding the Sentinels team
Despite its great fame, the Sentinels team has not been spared from scandals. Back in 2021, sinatraa was expelled from the squad, who was accused of violence. The player himself received a ban from Riot Games after which he never returned to the squad.
Another scandal with a Sentinels player took place at the beginning of 2023. SicK, another member of the champion's squad, was arrested for breaking into a Ferrari. As a result, the American was expelled from Sentinels after sitting in jail for several days.
The present Sentinels team
Today Sentinels VALORANT team is a part of American league. Once in the partnership, the organization decided to seriously reconsider their approach to repay the organizers for their confidence.
However, at the start of the new season, the team was unable to prove themselves in VCT 2023: LOCK//IN São Paulo and finished in last place after a 0-2 defeat by Fnatic in the first round.
The North American squad is now preparing for the start of the affiliate league, where they hope to compete for high places. With a strong roster made up entirely of former and current stars, the Sentinels remain a serious contender.
