Participants of The International 2022: Thunder Awaken

Thunder Awaken this year was noted for its excellent performance at the regional level and far from the best performance at international tournaments. In the next issue of the “Participants of The International 2022 ” column, we will analyze how the representatives of South America, the Thunder Awaken team spent the gaming year 2022. Earlier, we talked about why Team Aster is the second Dota 2 team in the Chinese region.

Results in the ranking season

Tour 1

The DPC 2021/2022 Thunder Awaken season has started on an extremely high note. The Peruvian team won 7 matches out of 7 within DPC SA 2021/2022 Tour 1: Division I. NoPing e-sports managed to take the only card from the winners of the regional league. The championship allowed Thunder Awaken to earn $30,000, 300 DPC points and a slot in the regional finals that Valve organized due to the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation in Ukraine.

As a result of the draw for DPC SA 2021/2022 Tour 1: Regional Final, Matthew and the team started their journey in the quarterfinals against APU King of Kings , who were beaten with a score of 2:1. Then in the semi - final Thunder Awaken lost to the future champions from Beastcoast , which you can read about on our website . After losing to Infamous in the lower bracket with a score of 0:2, Thunder Awaken left the tournament. 3rd place earned the organization $15,000.

Tour 2

In DPC SA 2021/2022 Tour 2: Division I, the Peruvians repeated the result of the first round. Their tournament statistics were again 7-0, but this time they lost one Thunder Awaken map to Infinity. The team earned $30,000 for the 1st place in the league, 400 DPC points and a slot at ESL One Stockholm 2022, the first Dota 2 Major this season.

At the Major in Sweden, the team from South America performed well. Thunder Awaken made it into Group B, which resulted in them having to play a tiebreaker with 4 teams having a 7-5 record. After winning 3 bo1 matches against TSM , Team Liquid and Team Spirit , Thunder Awaken advanced to the upper bracket of the playoffs. The victory over BetBoom Team with a score of 2:1 brought the team to the semi-finals of the upper bracket, where the Peruvians had a duel against Tundra Esports . In a protracted confrontation, Pandaboo and the team lost to the opponent on two maps in a row and fell into the lower bracket. There, the South American team could not oppose OG in any way, as a result of which Thunder Awaken took 5-6th place at ESL One Stockholm 2022. The team was rewarded with $25,000 and 385 DPC points.

Tour 3

For the third time, they failed to repeat their performance in the first division of the regional league Thunder Awaken. But the 6-1 statistics still ensured victory at the DPC SA 2021/2022 Tour 3: Division I. Matthew and his teammates lost their debut match against Infamous with a score of 0:2. The triumph in the DPC league earned the organization $30,000, 500 DPC points and a ticket to the PGL Arlington Major 2022, the final Major of the season. The Peruvian club at that time had already earned 1540 DPC points, which was enough to receive an invitation to The International 2022. But there is no extra opportunity to practice at the international level and earn money.

At PGL Arlington Major 2022, the team came with a replacement in the person of Alone, who played instead of DarkMago. The team ended up in Group A, where they were obviously considered one of the outsiders. Thunder Awaken did not win a single match in the group stage, and 5 draws and 3 losses were not enough for a place in the playoffs. The Peruvians went home with nothing, taking 15-16th place in the tournament.

Results in third-party tournaments

Thunder Awaken this year took part in a local tournament from BTS, and also qualified for ESL One Malaysia 2022 through a closed regional qualifier. At ESL One Malaysia 2022, the players took 4th place in Group A and received a place in the lower bracket. There, the Peruvians sensationally defeated Nigma Galaxy with a score of 2:0, but OG became an impassable test for them. After losing 1:2, Thunder Awaken took 5th-6th place in the tournament and earned $15,000.

Thunder Awaken results in events from third-party organizers:

  • BTS Pro Series Season 10: Americas - 1st - $20,000
  • ESL One Malaysia 2022 South America: Closed Qualifier - 1st
  • ESL One Malaysia 2022 - 5th-6th place - $15,000

Current line-up

The Peruvian players have been playing together for almost a year now, with the synergy of the players everything is fine, but individual performance sometimes fails.

Thunder Awaken's roster is shown below:

  • Christian 'Pakazs' Casanova
  • Herrera 'Darkmago' Gonzalo
  • Rafael 'Sacred' Yonatan
  • Farith 'Matthew' Puente
  • Jose 'Pandaboo' Hernandez

During the season, Thunder Awaken earned $165,000. The team obviously does not claim to win at The International 11, however, it can surprise and beat one of the stronger clubs. Top 12 at the World Cup could be considered a good result for a team that shines at the regional level.

Recall that The International 2022 will be held from October 15 to 30 this year in a LAN format. The venue will be Suntec Singapore and Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The top 20 teams from around the world will compete for the biggest prize pool of the year, which is determined by the sales of the Battle Pass 2022 .
